Since being sworn into office, I have supported student learning by:

  • Honing the ASD School Board’s strategic 5 year plan to focus on Reading and Math proficiency as well as Career, College and Life Readiness and working with fellow Board members to keep the District accountable in demonstrating growth in these areas;

  • Advocating for a safe commitment to in-person school, more robust supports for our “virtual” students, increased student mental health supports, and improved transparency about Covid’s impact on student attendance;

  • Visiting dozens of schools—speaking to principals, office staff, teachers and students—to better understand the magnitude of our challenges and opportunities;

  • Emphasizing the important roles that small class sizes, staff retention, and time for educators’ professional development have on student outcomes;

  • Advocating for universal pre-K and improved teacher training in the UA system, and opposing proposed cuts to ASD’s preschool programming;

  • Continuing to review and update ASD’s Wellness Policy;

  • Supporting the expansion of the Eagle Academy Charter School and 10-year charter renewals for Aquarian Charter School, Alaska Native Cultural Charter School, and Family Partnership Charter School;

  • Voting to rename the Dr. Etheldra Davis—Fairview Elementary School and to prioritize student voices in Board meetings;

  • Supporting changes to ASD’s graduation regalia protocols;

  • Supporting the Board’s “Student Community Workforce Agreement;”

  • Hiring a new Superintendent.
